There are too many characters to get to really know them, allowing them all to come off as silly rather than amusing. The plot skips around from one to the other, and given Jane Smiley's long protracted sentences, the whole story is an effort to follow.

The experiment with the captive Landrace boar named "Earl Butz" (whose point of view we also see) is the only misfortune that earned my sympathy.

The book was a nice satire on a whole cast of the students, faculty, and staff on a Midwestern University and Smiley's caricatures of each of the characters was unique yet close to what we perceive these types of individuals to behave and act in a real life university. However, the subject matter and the strange plot was not wholly interesting to me, but that in itself is just a matter of personal taste.
Book was exactly as seller said it would be. Interesting story, each chapter is a different piece.
While I don't necessarily mind the author moving from character to character, I found it very difficult to keep track of who was who. I suppose I could have made notes, but that shouldn't be needed with leisure reading. As a result I didn't care about any of the characters, even Earl Butz. The experience was not satisfying.
This book made me fall in love with reading all over again. Ms Smiley's word craft and the way she picks up on basic humanness is awesome. It was easy to believe that the characters actually existed!
I had to muscle through the first 200 pages, but I have to admit that I started to get to know the characters a lot better. Cecelia, Chairman X, Earl Butz (hilarious), The Big Ag Companies, Nils, etc. I was close to giving up on it, when I finally found myself wondering about the characters when I was doing other things throughout the day. A pretty good read, but take a reference (or make a character chart) in the first 150 or so pages to keep everyone straight. I'm sure I missed a lot skimming in the beginning.
This is my favorite book. I'm an administrator at a land grant college most known for it's ag programs and I give copies of this book as a gift to retiring colleagues as a reminder of their time at the university. It's told from multiple viewpoints and incorporates the competing perspectives of students, faculty, administrators high and low, townies, and the state government. The characters are rich and familiar, and it's funny and touching.
Because I grew up on an agricultural college campus where my father was a department head deeply involved in campus and state government, I loved reading "MOO". I knew people to match every single character, including Earl Butz, the pig. The satire was so true to life -- and explained so many things I only half understood as someone in grade school and junior and senior high school -- that I'm surprised someone in Ames didn't sue Jane Smiley for libel.

My husband, on the other hand, couldn't understand what I was laughing about, even when I read sections aloud to him. I guess this requires a special reading audience to truly appreciate the competition, levels of power, and irony so I took off a star from my previous rating.

I kept a list of many of her metaphors and am using them a poem and short stories. They are priceless.

Finally, I must thank the reviewer who only gave this one star and explained why the disjointed vignettes, multiple characters, and no real story line disturbed him. All those characteristics were common at my family's supper table and were exactly why I picked up the book from a used bookstore.
