The characters are convincingly well-drawn, such that the Reader gets to know them—especially Pastor Brigid and Mary, but also the rigid and timebound parishioners in her parish who are afraid of change and new life even as they unconsciously long for it once they’re met at some depth.
It’s pleasurable to follow Brigid’s and Mary’s growthas individuals and as members of a community as well as in their friendship.
The novel is a great story which captures that era when more women were first being ordained and called to small-town parishes.
I found the pastoral visit to Sarah to be the most moving part of the book—due to Brigid trusting her role, rather than simply taking things personally; she had the courage to visit an “enemy” in her congregation; then sit and listen, be present, and love.
As a man, I also enjoyed the warm, potent eroticism of these women’s sexual feelings and desires.
I appreciated the ambivalence of Brigid's husband Doug about her entering the ministry and then moving to live with her in her new place of work.

Sea Level by Nancy Kilgore is a lovely and lyrical read. She writes of a young, female minister sent to serve a congregation in a remote village on the Virginia coast. The members of the congregation do not all welcome her with open arms. Almost anyone who lives in a small, close-knit community and belongs to a congregation will recognize the issues. For Brigid Petersen, it is the Cemetery Committee.

Running in tandem with Brigid's attempt to win over the hearts of the congregation is Mary Bradley's story. Mary, and artist, is returning to Sand Hill after living in New York City for many years. The transition is not as smooth or easy as she might have hoped. In the end, both women learn something about themselves, and about the benefits (and challenges) of small-town living.
The human dilemmas are so clearly articulated it was easy to suddenly see personal foibles of my own. The characters are full and real. I felt compassion for all of the characters, and although I did not like all of them, I enjoyed getting to know some quirky but very real people. The two main characters are strong women whom I was cheering for throughout the book. I could see and smell the flat, ocean-side landscape, and imagine the mixed feelings of the people wanting to escape, return, or never leave... The discussions of Christianity and the debates in this rural town were fascinating and a peek at a national conflict of the definition of Christianity. The author has crafted a pleasurable novel dealing with some hefty issues the crisis of the small farmer, bigotry, alcoholism, compassion, grief, courage, and sexism. Her creative talent is a pleasure, and I hope she writes another book soon.
Just finished reading Sea Level. I felt such tenderness toward these very human characters, their loves, flaws, challenges. Nancy Kilgore weaves much wisdom into a moving story that carried me away. She handles theological matters deftly and with nuance. Great read.
I loved the characters and the story and conflict in the family and town. This is the story of a minister who goes the distance to do her job to create light in the world and how this can get tangled up and then untangled. Love how this book explains this process in life.
This first novel by Kilgore is astounding in its simplicity while weaving a fascinating tale of becoming and belonging. The descriptions of this Virginian peninsula put the reader in a place unmistakable for any other. The transitions between the settings and characters are seamless. The people are real beyond a doubt, the dialogue rings true and the ending is a delightful, otherworldly surprise. Nominated for The Pushcart Prize, this is an unforgettable book, not to be missed!
Great narrative of coming into one's calling. I would have liked it have been longer. I wanted to get to know the characters in more detail.
Sea Level sneaks up on you and engages you effortlessly-- gentle story about times when people are not so gentle with each other, but grow with change and deepen our capacity to care. I love Nancy's characters and descriptions of place. She gives voice to important, contemporary issues within the church, within religion. A wonderful read and I look forward to her next book very much.
